SWINDON College's new state-of-the-art campus is to be given the royal seal of approval.

It has been announced that HRH the Duchess of Cornwall will officially open the £17m campus at North Star at the end of the month.

And students are to get a firsthand glimpse of royalty as they roll out the red carpet with a series of special welcomes.

Camilla will tour the main new campus building and meet staff and students in the college's hairdressing, art and design, performing arts, business, construction and engineering departments before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the event. Invited guests will then enjoy a buffet lunch, prepared by the college's catering students.

The Duchess will be presented with a bouquet of flowers from the college's floristry department and a gift commissioned by its art and design students. Both gifts will be presented by college students.

The visit came about after the college wrote to Clarence House to see if Camilla could attend.

And Swindon College principal Jonquil Brooks said that she was thrilled to showcase the college's new multi-million-pound surroundings to such an important visitor.

"We are very honoured that HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will be opening our new single site campus," she said.

"We are really looking forward to showing her our stunning facilities and giving her an appreciation of all the things we do at Swindon College."

Swindon College moved to its new home in September.

The new campus buildings provide the college with industry standard facilities in art and design, hairdressing, computing, music and general trades and plumbing.

In all they add 10,500 square metres of purpose-built learning facilities and workshops to the existing site and confirm the college's position as the leading provider of vocational, work-based education in the area.

The college also has specialist facilities for catering, engineering, construction and beauty students.

The Duchess will be visiting the college on Wednesday, November 29.

It is Swindon's second royal visit of the year.

In June, HRH Princess Anne visited Lydiard Park to get this year's Corporate Games under way in her role as the games' patron.
