THE hunt is on for a Swindon cyclist who launched a road rage attack on a teatime driver.

The incident happened just after 5.30pm on Friday at the junction of Beech Avenue and Akers Way in Swindon.

According to police a cyclist rode into a car being driven by a man in his sixties.

As soon as the driver realised what had happened he got out of his car to see if the cyclist was injured.

But soon the two men started pushing and shoving one another.

Then the cyclist pulled out some kind of weapon and hit the driver in the face.

The blow caused what police described as a nasty cut above the eye'.

Moments later the cyclist was back on his bike and rode away.

Because the incident happened in daylight at a busy time of day, police believe there were a number of witnesses to the assault.

Now officers are trying to track them down.

"This was an unusual situation," said DC Matt Lewis of Swindon CID.

"What happened was that an incident on the road spilled over into a particularly violent assault.

"Because of that we very much want to track this cyclist down.

"We are also very keen to trace a woman who was at the scene at the time of the attack.

"She recognised the cyclist and passed his details onto the female passenger in the car. We need to talk to her about this."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC Lewis at Swindon CID on 0845 4087000 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
