THE first British woman to walk to the magnetic North Pole compared her trip with starting up a new business.

Sue Stockdale, who is also an international motivational speaker, visited the University of Bath in Swindon in Marlowe Avenue as part of Women's Enterprise Day.

The event, which was held last night and was organised by Sue's networking business, Mission Possible, aimed to encourage women who are thinking about starting up a business to give it a go.

"Starting up a business is like going on an expedition to the North Pole," said the 41-year-old from Faringdon.

"It seems really scary and impossible, but once you take those first few steps you realise you can do it.

"Business is like a journey and each step is a challenge.

"I never believed I could become a polar explorer but when I read about the opportunity in the newspaper to join the team of novices, led by David Hempleman-Adams, I sent off for the application form straight away.

"It arrived back and stated are you man enough for the Ultimate Challenge?' it was like a red rag to a bull - I had to apply to show the organisers that women could be explorers too."

It took 30 days of cross-country skiing for Sue to complete the challenge back in 1996.

Sue's company runs a women's networking group at the university every month, and she has been closely involved with the University's Women into Enterprise programme working as a tutor for the past three years.

During her talk she gave some top tips to women who are keen to take their business venture forward.

"I would say you have to be passionate about what you're doing," she said.

"Also avoid being around negative people - it is far easier to work with positive people who can encourage you along.

"You have to think about what you want to get from your business and to see an end point.

"This will then motivate you throughout.

"Most importantly, enjoy it and keep it fun."

In addition to Sue's inspirational message, attendees heard from Kelly Nicholls, the founder of KN photo, who is one of Cheltenham's leading photographers about her experiences of running a business.

There was also a talk from Akasha Lonsdale, who spoke at length on the psychology of business.

The event at the university was one of 5,000 taking place throughout the UK as part of Women's Enterprise Week.
