HOCKEY: Wootton Bassett made it five wins in a row with a 4-1 victory over Team Bath Buccs G in Wilts & NE Somerset Division One on Saturday.
Bassett looked the stronger from the start and quickly took the lead when a series of crisp passes found Stuart Lawrence at the back post to divert the ball into the goal.
The home side continued to attack and went close on numerous occasions before a slick move down the right led a shot from Grant Kirkup that was saved, but rebounded out for Mark Skivington to lift it over the keeper and take the score to 2-0.
Shortly aftewards Dan Jeffery found himself in front of goal and converted his strike to score his third goal in two weeks.
Bassett then made it 4-0 before half-time when Lawrence scored his second of the game.
The second half was an entirely different affair, with Wootton Bassett sitting back on their lead.
Bath had numerous attacks but the Bassett defence held firm until a cross from the left found a Bath striker at the back post to make the score 4-1.
The goal woke Bassett up and the last 10 minutes of the game was end to end with both teams going close but neither scoring.
The end result was Bassett's fifth victory in a row to take them to within a point of the top of the table.
On Saturday Bassett travel to Bath University for a top-of-the-table clash, while the 2nds are at Devizes in the Wilts Badgers league.
