Envy of the club world
An artist's impression of what the nightclub will look like
An artist's impression of what the nightclub will look like

MILLIONS of pounds are being poured into the transformation of a much-loved Swindon nightspot - and this is how it will look.

The Brunel Rooms closed late last year after being taken over by club operator Luminar.

Since then a £3m refurbishment has been carried out.

Now the new owners have revealed the club's new name, Liquid And Envy, and said it will finally open its doors in the middle of next month.

Jon Jackson, the general manager of the venue, said: "Once complete the re-fit is certain to put us on the radar of every clubber in the Wiltshire area.

"With our new hi-spec interior and unrivalled line-up of bespoke events, Liquid And Envy will provide the ultimate must visit' clubbing experience.

"Unique touches, such as our VIP booths, state-of-the art light and sound systems, 360-degree projection and our smart roof terrace will really set us apart from our competition.

"The two rooms will allow us to provide two entirely different clubbing experiences, ensuring we have something for everyone."

The Brunel Rooms opened in 1972 and instantly proved a big hit with Swindon clubbers.

Over the years 5,000,000 revellers passed through the doors and made the most of the revolving dancefloor.

The club also had big-name pulling power. Stars who appeared there included The Jam, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Suzie Quatro, Blondie, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Elvis Costello.

But by late last year the Reid family, which owned the venue, had decided to sell up and move on, so sold it to nightclub operator Luminar.

The all-new Liquid room will boast a 360-degree hydraulic projection rig, state-of-the-art light and sound systems and a modern and contemporary décor.

There will also be an exclusive VIP lounge.

Envy will sport a luxurious finish and is aiming at sophisticated customers. It will have table service and private booths and be available for hire.

The new-look venue will also have a £100,000 roof terrace.

The 1,700-capacity venue will open four nights a week and will operate an over 18s policy.

The re-launch weekend will see the venue host a ticket-only VIP event.

Liquid and envy clubs are meant to be ace. Lets just hope it doesnt end up with the same bad rep that brunel got.

i never saw a revolving dance floor. however i do remember a bar that used to judder around quite badly, i guess that could be classed as revolving!

Have a proper dress code for starters no hoodies or caps or trainers.Keep out the Chavs, and there Kerry Katone lookalike girfriends that would be a good start. Emz there is one of these up Manchester it is awesome..

If you like meat-market, Chav clubs playing the naffest 'dance' music known to man then, yes, they're even better than ace.

Brunel Rooms RIP :(

err... you should be happy in that case. Sounds like no change apart from a lick of paint, new carpets, some new kit and a new name...

I completely agree.

I’ll concede that The Rooms used to be a bit tatty but it catered for a different market that you just don’t get in franchise clubs.

What’s the point in having the same club 3 times over in Swindon? Love it or loathe it, The Rooms played a wide range of innovative and ground breaking music that you can’t get anywhere else.

RIP Brunel Rooms

hi everyone
first time on here - had to laugh at "uproars"
comments regarding the "juddering" revolving bar - spot on - thats exactly how I remember it
Posted by: Al Smith, Swindon, UK on 1:17pm Thu 20 Mar 08
Liquid and Envy - probably the countries biggest chain of meat markets. One sells Lamb the other Mutton (dressed as Lamb) ;-)

Sad to see the Brunel Rooms go after all those years to be replaced by a clone binge drinking joint.

Oh and I have been to nightclubs in this chain.

Neither did anyone else Uproar! There was of course the Revolving bar -us Bar staff in the Early days - I'm talking 1973-76 affectionately called it the revolting bar because it was a pig of a place to work on -cramped and the ever jerky motion -still it had its appeal - in those days the punters were 6-7 deep all the way round and it was found the best way of serving was for all the staff to move clockwise on to the next person who had reached the front of the scrum!

10 CC also appeared at the Rooms as I recall and I seem to remember at least 3 Miss Thamedown contests - hosted by Noel Edmonds,Tony Blackburn and Leslie Crowther. I have many happy memories of the Brunel and the people I worked with at the time. Doubt I'd fit the entry criteria thesedays though!

Hang on a sec all you RIP Brunel Rooms lot I went in once the place was a complete sh1t hole girls vomiting into pint pots and everyone walking round smacked outtta there faces or snorting coke if thtas what you wnat back then I can see why Swindon will always be a backwater town full of muppets. Its new its clean it has VIP private booths table service and £3million spent on it and you lot moan. Need to get a life jeese it was a crap club for at least the last 5yrs good riddance...

You what Emz these people make me pi55 they moan about how the Council keep saying they are gonna spend money re-generating the Town then when someone come along and spends over £3 million pound. To give us a modern up to date club with state of the art equipment the MOOOOAAAANNNNNN This place will never move forward cos they wont let it they dont like change all old before there time, god half of em are dead and dont even know it..

R.I.P Swindon Town of the Old Folk...
Posted by: Al Smith, Swindon, UK on 2:04pm Thu 20 Mar 08
VOR I agree the Brunel Rooms were a bit of a dump, but changing the name to Liquid and Envy won't really change anything. Apart from something unique and not just another clone town drinking establishment.
Posted by: emmylou83, Stratton on 2:09pm Thu 20 Mar 08
Bg Mac - and what would you call brunel rooms? I personally prefer to go somewhere where drugs aren't tried to be pushed onto me every 5mins, so I stayed away from brunel rooms I sure wont miss it.
Posted by: Big Mac on 2:11pm Thu 20 Mar 08
The problem is, VoR, that any nightclub is only as good as its operator... and no matter how much money Luminar have spent on the venue, if it's like all their other clubs it'll just be a slightly more upmarket version of Walkabout in terms of the actual nights they put on.

And that is the very last thing Swindon needs more of.

Is it wrong that I like walkabout then?

VOR,

I’ve already conceded that The Rooms was a dive that need a significant amount of money spent on it, but I still maintain that it’s a enormous loss to Swindon for the simple fact it’s be taken over by a monotonous franchise.

Where’s the cultural diversity now?

You bang on about moving forward, but this town is fast becoming a wearisome clone of every other town up and down the country with its Weatherspoons, Yates, Walkabout etc.

Imagine if you could only eat at Mc Donald’s, KFC, or the Hungry horse

"The two rooms will allow us to provide two entirely different clubbing experiences, ensuring we have something for everyone."

Been to the Liquid and Envy website and it seems the new owner is fibbing to us already!
Something for everyone = R&B, Dance, Club, Chart & Cheese!
That'll be not real music with real guitars and drums then
Just another club playing the same sh*te!
Glad we have The Vic, Bar 12 and The Furnace

I also remember Killing Joke and Big Country playing at the Brunel.
God, we need a decent music venue in this town.
The Brunel would've made a good venue, shame Carling didn't snap it and add it to the Academy network.
Posted by: emmylou83, Stratton on 2:26pm Thu 20 Mar 08
oooh adam I just realised you'll be in trouble with VoR he used to manage Yates in town
Posted by: Voice of Reason, The Parks on 2:36pm Thu 20 Mar 08
That ok Emz cos I know what he means and what he is getting at about clonning and it is true. What Swindon is screaming out for is a decent "LIVE" venue I think we all agree on that one.But up North the L/E clubs have been quite succesfull and hopefully will mean less trouble in other parts of the Town as more people spread over a wider area..?
Posted by: staffie owner, Redhouse on 2:37pm Thu 20 Mar 08
I grew up in Newbury with the Liquid there. It's just a big cheesy disco that charges £8 to get in - classy!! It especially loves it Britney and Christina Aquilera remixes, is that proper dance music? Um no. Brunels offered the best in Dance Music and everyone I know around the UK knows of Brunels as being a legendry venue. Now it will be a meat market for kids to have one to many VK Blues.
What a waste!!
Posted by: Voice of Reason, The Parks on 2:47pm Thu 20 Mar 08
Better a VK Blue than a line of Coke Staffie owner it may have been none once for its music but that was back in the day. The only time it got busy latley was nappy nights "classy". I come from Manchester and no one up there ever heard of the Brunel Rooms sorry mate it was not that legendary maybe in Wilts.

Sorry if you like Sugerbabes/Shane Ward etc but its true. We should be attracting people like Foo Fighters, Artic Monkeys, I love Iron Maiden ok not everyones taste but what chance have I got of them ever coming to Swindon. There's nothing wrong with you liking them, just as long as you're aware that they're both the very lowest common denominator in their respective sectors.

Personally, I prefer something a little less homogenised and that's made a bit of an effort to create a real venue and atmosphere - rather than a building in which to fleece as many customers as possible while keeping running costs at the bare minimum.

Refreshing to hear that people think the concencus is that yet another plastic lowest common denominator venue is the last thing the town needs... Trouble is, which came first? The unsophisticated clientelle or the the club catering for them?

Luminar as a company have had it's ups and downs over the last few years, with their CEO losing out every time he engages in a 'slanging match' with Tim Martin of Wetherspoons. I'm sure you will all enjoy drinking out of plastic glasses, which is a Luminar policy now.

V.I.P's & Swindon, surely that is going to be something that is a triffle hard to achieve. maybe our worldclass football team can relax after snatching defeat from the jaws of defeat with a nice chilled vintage wkd blue. i wonder what the classification for a V.I.P is? would they be attired in wither burberry or the lasted pret-a-porter releases from sports soccer?

Never cared for Brunel much. Would much prefer a few pints in the donkey, then the Furnace any day of the week.
