Swindon Town Community Foundation C6 boys won their first-ever EFL CEFA Cup in a huge day at the Pirelli Stadium for the group.

On May 8, the STFC Community Foundation travelled to Burton Albion as both the C6 Boys and C6 Girls contested the national finals of the CEFA Cup.

The boys managed to defeat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 in the final after the girls had narrowly missed out 1-0 against Derby County in a wonderful day for the organisation.

Assistant Head of Foundation Shane Hewlett said: “It was a great achievement for all involved, to get a girls and boys team to a national final is unheard of and to actually go there and win it with the boys is fantastic.

“To give it some context, 180 teams started out in this competition, with big clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Newcastle United, so to get to the final is literally unbelievable.

“The boys have had to do it the hard way, they have won eight games of which six have been away from home, including against Norwich City, Ipswich Town, and Birmingham City. We counted it up and they have had to travel for 33 hours to get to this point.

“To get there and do it is just incredible, it hasn’t really sunk in that we are now national champions.

“We took nearly 200 up from Swindon to watch, the programme is in conjunction with Commonweal School and they brought students up from younger years so they could come and see that.

“Seeing them celebrate together and with the girls as well is more important than the trophy.”

Hewlett added that it was not just the on-pitch success that has been so gratifying for League Two’s Community Club of the Season winners, but what these children have achieved off it as well.

He said: “The hard work gets put together and not just to win in the final, but when you have a girl who has been accepted into Oxford University, that is an achievement of its own as well.

“We are going to have participants that go on to do really well not just as players but also as coaches, we have got players going out to the US on scholarships, and have successful careers.

“We look at if you don’t make it as a professional footballer, what does your life look like after?

“Through education, academics, and football, we try and give them as many future pathways as possible.”
